Abstract
Joachim von Sandrart's Teutsche Academie (Nuremberg, 1675) is widely acknowledged as one of the major art publications of the seventeenth century. Written by Germany's foremost contemporary painter, the folio-size and heavily illustrated book contains comprehensive technical accounts of the arts of architecture, sculpture and painting, as well as biographies of artists from antiquity up to Sandrart's own time. Drawing on a range of archive material, the article examines aspects of the production, advertising and sale of the book. A documentary appendix contains transcriptions and translations of four letters detailing the purchase and binding of a copy of the Teutsche Academie in Frankfurt in the autumn of 1675.
